From Teenage Dream to Lifelong Calling
Born in 1992 in Burlington, North Carolina, Mason Keck grew up listening to everything from grunge to Southern rock—but one band changed everything: The Black Crowes.
“I swear I wore the cover off three or four copies” of Southern Harmony and Musical Companion— “it just fucking rocks so hard.”

Hard Lessons of Location
Post-high school, Mason and the band chased opportunity, relocating to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute. There, he nearly landed a gig with Slash—but was two years too young.
“I looked at it as a learning experience… hoped I was good enough for them to bend the rules.” rockandbluesmuse.com
They later moved to Athens, GA, where daily rehearsals shaped a tighter, more mature sound. Two years later, they returned to Burlington ready to build from their success on the road
Balancing Soulful Songwriter with Stage Commander
Mason still sees himself as both poet and performer.
“The duality of the roles… makes us unique … half of me wants to be the front man, and the other half… the Jimmy Page thing.” rockandbluesmuse.com
He strives to write songs that resonate deeply while delivering them with the energy of a frontman —blended perfectly in tracks like “Hope It Ain’t That Bad” and “Save My Soul.”
Climbing Slowly, Rooted Deep
Mason reflects on the legacy of Southern rock that precedes him:
“It fucked me up last year when I realized Ronnie Van Zant was twenty-nine when he died, … I have to keep in mind that everything is different today… Rock and roll can be a slow climb these days.”
Still, he holds onto the value of organic growth:
“We’ve been doing this for fifteen years… it’s more grassroots… The people who come to see us are THERE to see us… it’s going to be like a family reunion.”
Current Focus and Future Drive
Mason sees Jive Mother Mary’s mission as clear: perfect the blend of depth and dynamism. “My main goal is to figure out a way to have a rock song that is both energetic and has depth.” metalkorner.com+11rockandbluesmuse.com+11thenewfury.com+11
As they prime to open for ZZ Top this October, Mason’s journey both grounds and propels the band —connecting nostalgia with now.
